I once had a discussion about who would might have caught the most waves ever on the Hoax Coast? I came down to Phil Trigger or Gavin Duffy. Someone else thought Mick Pierce.
I started surfing with Duffy in 1974, we were Davey’s Bay locals, and he never stopped. He’s the oldest grommet on the coast and, along the way, he has been a stalwart at the Peninsula Surfriders Club: commi...

You could probably do an interesting social history on the development of surfboard stickers and logos and artwork. I've certainly seen similar explorations of book design, for example, this article on the various covers of Sylvia Plath's novel, The Bell Jar
From the hot-rod inspired early days of Beach Boys and Endless Summer to the rainbow colours and dolphins of the 70s, then t...

Vintage Surf Day at Point Leo, on November 12 2017, was a packed affair with perfect weather and plenty to see. It was a bit of a battle between classic Kombis and classic surfboards and some great displays on hand and plenty of stories about the good old days floating around as well.
It was nice to see some of the displays including a bit of history with some key dates and all ar...

I added this photo of Mark Warren sweeping into a cutback at The Point, during the 1976 Australian Titles, an event he eventually won, to the 1970s section and also on the Instagram site today.
Tracks was a bit disparaging about the contest but described it this way:
On the Monday the contest is moved to Point Leo 'better known as the Slug Pit' (!) 'Claw explained the rudiments o...

These days are a great way to take a good look at some beautiful old surfboards and other surfing-related memorabilia, not to mention hear some p...

There is evidence all over the place of their involvement with ocean, primarily in the collecting of shell-fish. At Flinders, for example prior to European settlement the Boonwurung Aborigines occupied the area

Welcome to the latest version of the Hoax Coast home page. This is the latest version of a website that started way back in the mid 2000s, first on Geocities, then on Tripod and finally on Wetpaint as a wiki.
The idea of this site is to celebrate the rich history and heritage of surfing on the Mornington Peninsula*. It's about some of the history, the people, the surf breaks, the...
